"Instead of Being on the Complaining Side, Focus on the Solution"

In his speech at the "Green Steel Summit 2025," Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD) and Tosyalı Holding, shed light on the steel industry's journey towards carbon-free production.

Speaking at the summit, which brought together high-level representatives from the public, industry, finance, energy, and technology sectors and addressed strategic topics such as carbon-free production, circular economy, Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and Emissions Trading System (ETS) compliance, Tosyalı stated, "As a sector, we must transform ourselves according to this new era shaped by sustainability, advanced technology, and efficiency," delivering important messages to the sector.

Emphasizing the critical role the steel industry will play in achieving Net Zero targets on the path to carbon-free production, Tosyalı expressed that they continue to grow their investments with projects focused on solar energy, sustainability, efficiency, and scale, saying, "We are holding this meeting at a time of significant changes in the world. Therefore, I see today as an opportunity for us."

In his speech, Tosyalı highlighted that the steel industry is undergoing a multidimensional challenge along with macroeconomic imbalances, climate crisis, trade wars, and technological transformation, stating, "The climate crisis, macroeconomic imbalances, changes in perspectives on globalization, and developments in artificial intelligence and advanced technology continue to be challenging. The world is evolving towards a structure with increasingly fragmented and divided markets rather than a single global market. The tension between China and the USA is also transforming global competition conditions. What we need to do here is to do our homework well. I believe that instead of being on the complaining side, focusing on the solution is more beneficial for all of us."

Addressing the current emission structure of the sector, Tosyalı said, "Today, the global steel industry is responsible for 7% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. When looking at the energy source used in steel production globally, coal still ranks first with 73%. The rate of facilities producing with scrap is only 14%. Therefore, more investment in renewable energy and clean technologies is needed to reduce emissions. It is of great importance to further encourage the use of clean energy sources such as solar in the industry in our country and to establish standards related to hydrogen production and distribution."

"Our investments have three focuses: Sustainability, efficiency, and scale."

Talking about Tosyalı Holding's green transformation investments, Tosyalı said, "In this context, one of the main topics we focus on as Tosyalı is SPP investments and the use of hydrogen in production... As the company with the world's largest rooftop SPP, we continue to grow our solar energy investments. With our domestic and international investments, we are building a steel ecosystem that extends from raw material to the final product. Despite the great earthquake disaster, we started production in 2023 at the Tosyalı Iron and Steel İskenderun Facility, which is the largest industrial investment in our country in recent years. This facility, completed with an investment of 2.5 billion dollars, has started to make a significant contribution to value-added steel exports while eliminating Turkey's 4 million tons of flat steel imports. Our investments have three focuses: sustainability, efficiency, and scale. We solve everything within the Tosyalı ecosystem from the mine to the final product," he said.

At the end of his speech, Fuat Tosyalı called on the sector, "As a sector, we must transform ourselves according to this new era shaped by sustainability, advanced technology, and efficiency."
