In 2016, total crude steel production grew by 5.2 % and production in electric arc furnace mills increased by 6.7 %, As a result, total scrap consumption of steel sector increased from 24.06 mt to 25.88 mt, up by 7.6 %. While 17.7 million tons of scrap was met though import, up by 9 %, 8.16 million tons of scrap consumption was met through the domestic market, which is up by 4.5 % y-o-y. In 2016, Turkey imported % 60 of its scrap from EU, 18 % from USA and 16 % from CIS. The three regions accounted for 95 % of Turkey’s total scrap import. As scrap prices fell in 2016, scrap import value declined by 7.6 % to 3.96 billion dollars.
Last year, in addition to 3.96 billion USD worth scrap imports, Turkish steel industry also imported 10.42 million tons of iron ore, up by 4.1 % (0.7 billion USD), 1.1 million tons of pig iron (274 million USD), 401.000 tons of ferro alloys (372 million USD) and 5.1 million tons of coking coal (497 million USD). Total value of steel industry’s import declined from 9.98 billion USD in 2014 to 5.9 billion USD in 2016.
